Being a parent of a child on the ’spectrum’, coupled with more than 35 years of working as a child psychiatrist, give me an excellent understanding of the challenges involved in bringing up a child outside the neurotypical continuum. Psychiatry and a medical degree enhance my understanding of my child and the children and adolescents I treat.

In addition to my own successful practice as a psychiatrist since 1978, I developed a program at SFCP* for training in Preschool Consultation, and I am particularly proud of my years of supervising mental health professionals who are assigned to preschools.

Over the years I’ve organized and delivered about 40 presentations, including Autism: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Early Recognition and Treatment of Infants and Toddlers with Drs. Barbara Kalmanson, Janet Green Babb, Laurent Danon-Boileau, Henry Massie, Tina Gabby and Lois Black, organized conferences, and presentated Grand Rounds at CPMC* with Dr. Kalmanson. I taught a seminar on Infant Development and Research in late 2009 in addition to teaching positions detailed in my resume.

In 1995, I was the recipient of a major grant for $1,200,000 from the Miriam and Peter Haas Fund to set up a therapeutic preschool at Bayview Burnett Children’s Center to serve high-risk children and families. After five years, the City of San Francisco picked up the project, and I continue to be a consultant to this challenging and successful project.

As a strong supporter of early intervention, it is my passion to help young children with developmental delays and pre-autism as well as later in the childhood and throughout the school years. When indicated I use the DIR (Developmental, Individual-Difference, Relationship-Based) approach known as Floortime pioneered by Stanley Greenspan, M.D.  I believe in an interdisciplinary approach and work tightly with a network of professionals.

Areas of expertise include autistic spectrum disorders, anxiety disorders, ADHD, OCD, learning disorders, and the mental health needs of children in general. I am a Board-Certified Psychiatrist and although I enjoy and regularly work with adults, my work with children and adolescents are my primary focus.
